Encaustic Artist – Jane Cousens

Artist Statement

Dancer II, 10 x 8 in., Drawing on Encaustic Monotype, SOLD

Jane Cousens is a Toronto based artist who is passionate about encaustic printmaking and painting.

She studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design after completing a graduate degree at Queen’s University in Kingston. Following a decades-long career in the public service, she is now dedicated to encaustic painting and teaching yoga.

She takes full advantage of the ethereal qualities of a centuries-old encaustic painting technique that fuses layers of translucent beeswax, oil paint and resin with embedded ephemera. She begins each work with an intention, a question or a deep feeling and through the colour palette, texture, symbol or subject matter infuses that intent into the artwork. Her exploration of sensory and spiritual experience evokes a sense of vulnerability that is uniquely meditative and engaging.
